Wine pairings usually refer to drinking a certain wine with specific food. For instance, you might pair Chardonnay with fish or pinot noir with an earthy mushroom or almond dish. But what about pairing wine with movies? If you’re the type of person who loves to slowly sip on a glass of merlot after dinner, choose a wine-themed movie to complete your relaxing evening.

Bottle Shock
This 2008 comedy/drama is available on Netflix and Amazon Prime. Bottle Shock takes you through California wine country in the 1970s at a time when French wines were considered superior to all others. The story is based on “The Judgment of Paris,” a wine tasting event that shook things up by revealing that wine grown elsewhere in the world can compete with or even resoundingly beat French wine.
Blood into Wine
Check out this 2010 documentary on Netflix and Amazon Video. If along with your passion for wine, you also like heavy metal music, Blood into Wine could be made for you. It features Maynard James Keenan (of Tool, A Perfect Circle, Puscifer and other rock groups), who also runs a winery in Arizona. The documentary is about the Arizona wine industry as a whole, which, though small, is an excellent expression of winemaking as both an art and a science.
Year of the Comet
Watch this 1992 thriller/romance on Amazon Video. The film – written by William Goldman, who also penned Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and All the President’s Men – centers on a wine taster who’s sent to Scotland to assess a recently discovered and very rare bottle of wine from 1811. The wine taster is paired with a bodyguard, and the two mix about as well as oil and water at first. But there’s more to it than their blossoming romance – the bottle is valuable, and others want to get their hands on it.
